Certain Volkswagen models have a cap that seals and protects the cylinder lock on the door. Underneath this cap is a notch you can pop off to expose the lock cylinder. If your model has this setup, insert the key into the cutout below the cap on the driver’s side, and pull the cap tab off with your other hand. You should be able to insert the key to open your door.
Certain rare models like the VW CC and the Touraeg don’t use a bayonet key to open the door. Instead, there’s an emergency key hidden inside the fob itself in case the battery dies. Press the button on the side of the fob and tug on the keyring loop. The hidden key should slide right out! It’s worth noting, however, this key will ONLY ALLOW YOU TO OPEN THE DOOR – NOT START THE ENGINE. Use the key fob to start your car once you gain entry.
If you have keyless access and the battery is low or dead, hold the fob against your steering column and press the start button. This always allows you to start your Volkswagen!
